The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team opened pool play with a convincing 2-0 win over New Zealand!

The U.S. women started the game off quickly with an early Carli Lloyd goal in the ninth minute.  They did not score again in the first half, but they dominated much of the action not allowing new Zealand many chances to get on the board.  Coming out of halftime it did not take the U.S. long to get back on the board for the second time, with a goal by Alex Morgan in the first minute of the half.  Much like the first half the U.S. dominated play the rest of the way, allowing few chances for New Zealand to get back in the game.

The U.S. Women’s Team is trying for their 5th gold medal since Women’s Soccer was added to the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.  They have won the gold medal in all but one Olympic games since then, with the exception being their loss to Norway in the gold medal game in the 2000 Sidney Olympics.

The U.S. is in group G and will also play France and Columbia for a chance to move on to the next round.  Their next game, and likely their toughest test in pool play, will be against France on Saturday.

Stay tuned for details.
