Malfunctions– they happen to all of us at some point. Yes, even to the best of us. It is how we deal with them that makes the difference. It seems that they always happen at the worst possible times, and in some situations, they can be deadly if not rectified quickly. With the proper training, you can overcome any of the three basic malfunctions most people experience.
Type 1 is a failure to feed or failure to fire. Either the magazine was not seated in the mag-well all the way, or the round in the chamber did not fire because the primer was not hit hard enough to ignite the round.
Type 2 is a failure to eject, also known as the “stove pipe.” This malfunction is caused by limp-wristing the pistol. This occurs when the shooter’s grip is not firm enough, and the wrist is not held firm/straight enough to keep the frame of the firearm from traveling rearward while the bolt or slide of the pistol cycles. This prevents the pistol’s slide from moving back far enough to extract the round out.
Type 3 is a failure to extract also known as the double feed. This malfunction is where the first round was not extracted out of the chamber and a second round is being fed into the chamber at the same time. This means two round are trying to occupy the same space at the same time.
How do you fix the different types of malfunctions? I like to keep it simple and do the one thing that will work for any of the different pistols out there. For type 1 and type 2, you can do the same things. The fix for them is called, “slap and rack.” Slap the magazine on the bottom of the gun to seat it fully, and then rack the slide to the rear forcefully and let it go forwards by itself.
For the 3rd type of malfunction, a double feed is fixed by first ripping the magazine out of the pistol and letting it drop to the ground. Next, turn the pistol so the chamber is pointed to the ground and rack the slide fast and forcefully three times. The first rack removes the first round, the second rack removes the next round, and the third rack makes sure the chamber is clear. Now reinsert a new magazine and slap it until it is seated fully, and then rack the slide to the rear and let it go forwards by itself to seat the round in the chamber.
Now let’s throw a monkey wrench in the works- how to deal with the three malfunctions with the use of only one hand. Why is this important? Let’s say you are injured in the arm or hand or you’re weak hand is holding on to your love so you can keep them out of danger. To deal with type 1 and 2, it is similar to the two hand approach. With the pistol in your hand, start by slapping the magazine on your thigh. Next, turn the pistol around and at an angle pointed away from you, catch the rear sight on you pants pocket or belt and push in at the same time push down.
For type 3, the process is a bit more complicated. When a double feed happens, take the pistol in your hand and hold the magazine release button in, if the magazine does not fall free which in many cases, it will not, then keep the magazine button pressed in, and at the same time raise your knee up as you slam your wrist on your knee. Be careful not to hit your wrist too hard to cause injury, or to lose your grip on the pistol sending it across the room. This will cause the magazine to fall out. Next, do the same as type 1 and 2, by turning the pistol around and at an angle pointed away from you, catch the rear sight on you pants pocket or belt and push in at the same time push down, remember to do this three times. Now, to reload the pistol, place the pistol in between your knees with the magazine well pointed out in front of you and hold it there. Next, reach around and grab a new magazine and place it into the magazine well. Then, grip the pistol again, and slap the magazine on your thigh to seat it. Now, turn the pistol around, and rack it on your pocket or belt.
Malfunctions are a part of shooting, and they can happen anytime, anywhere, even when you don’t want them to happen. Practice fixing these malfunctions, and when it comes time to shoot in the competition for your life and one of these malfunctions happens, you will be able to overcome them.
