We hear so many negative things about kids today, that I wanted to point out and honor a young man for his patriotism and inspiring me today.  What makes this story special, in my opinion, is the fact that he did this without hope of a reward.  It was clearly from his heart.

At the beginning of each school year during my first digital citizenship lesson,  I direct them to the poster by the classroom door and I ask, “How do you live your life when nobody’s watching?”  We then talk about the fact that they are virtually being videoed almost every waking moment of their day, and how their daily decisions can affect their futures.

Wyatt Warner’s parents have a lot to be proud of.  This young man was caught on a neighbor’s security camera sporting his patriotism when he stopped to say the Pledge of Allegiance. He wasn’t at school or a sporting event– both places where the pledge is frequently recited.  He acted of his own volition without prompting.

Seven-year- old Wyatt Warner, riding his bike up to his neighbor’s doorstep immediately stopped, put his hand over his heart, and recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag flying on his neighbor’s house before even ringing the doorbell.  And then, while he waited for the door to be answered, he gazed respectfully at the flag.

The homeowners shared the video with his proud mother who eventually shared it on Instagram.

People are always quick to point out our faults, especially with children.   Wyatt’s mother, Jamie said, “Sometimes we are only looking at them when we notice they are doing something wrong and we need to correct it. I wish I could see what my other two do when I am not looking.”

She continued by saying that children often did amazing things when parents weren’t watching and she wished every parent could see it, to show that their children are actually paying attention.  “I wished I could show it to every parent who feels like what they teach their kids goes in one ear and out the other. We try to teach our three kids about how lucky they are to live in this country and about the men and women who have served and died for our freedom.”

There are many stories like this that get skipped over because negativity rules the day. However, these young patriots should inspire and leave us full of hope for the future.
